Similar to modern-day zip lines, ropes and rollers were used by natives to cross swift-flowing rivers.
A TREACHEROUS JOURNEY
The trails they were treading were dangerously slick with mud from the persistent rains. One of the Lisu tribesmen even slipped and went tumbling down a mountainside. When Eugene Morse went to his aid, he also slid down the slippery slope. The two men fell 400 feet before coming to a stop.
Soon after that incident, the Lisu carriers announced that they were returning home. Only Russell Morseâs promise of an extra dayâs pay persuaded them to continue.
The group tried to cross the mountains at a pass, but driving rain and bitter cold drove them back. They tried again at another spot, and this time reached the top of the pass at an elevation of 12,000 feet. They were now near the border of western China and eastern Burma. As they made their descent, the ground was so slick with mud that they were able to slide down part of the way. They used wooden sticks to steer their bodies like oars on a boat.
As they came down from the mountains, they returned to the hot, sweaty jungle terrain. Their feet sank into mud that was a foot deep in some places. Here they stumbled upon the skeletons of Chinese soldiers who had died when the Japanese overtook Burma two years earlier. It was a chilling reminder of the war they had almost forgotten was still raging around them.
